Long Distance Paths

All of these paths lie either wholly or in part within the North East Lancashire area. With the exception of the Hyndburn Clog and the newly-created Pennine Bridleway they can be seen on OS Explorer maps 287 (West Pennine Moors), 21 (South Pennines) and 41 (Forest of Bowland and Ribblesdale).

Bronte Way  [Bronte Country]

The Bronte Way is a 43 mile long distance footpath which starts at Oakwell Hall ("Fieldhead" in Charlotte Bronte's novel Shirley) near Birstall in Kirklees near Bradford, and ends at Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham near Burnley in Lancashire's Pendle Witch Country.

Burnley Way  [Visit Burnley]

The route covers 37 miles passing through Burnley, Padiham, Worsthorne, Cliviger, Briercliffe and Hapton, combining rural and urban walking using public footpaths, bridle ways, canal towpaths and minor roads. The walk is divided into five sections each of which starts and finishes near public transport routes.

Hyndburn Clog  [Hyndburn Ramblers]

A 33 mile circular walk around the Borough of Hyndburn.

Irwell Sculpture Trail  [Official Site]

The Irwell Sculpture Trail follows a well established 30 mile footpath stretching from Salford Quays through Bury into Rossendale and up to the Pennines above Bacup.

Pendle Way  [Pendle Tourism]

A 45 mile circular walk in eight sections starts at Pendle Heritage Centre and passes through many picturesque villages, such as Barnoldswick, Earby and Newchurch. There are also six smaller circular walks along the route.

Pennine Bridleway  [Official Site]

A new multi-user route for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders connecting the green fields of Derbyshire through gritstone moors to the remote hills of Cumbria, roughly parallel to the Pennine Way but generally along lower-lying paths to the west of the hilltops. Despite the name it is also a great route for walkers and an alternative to the challenges of the Pennine Way. The first section to open, in May 2002, was the Mary Towneley Loop, a 47 mile shorter circuit through the South Pennines on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, around Todmorden and Bacup.

Ribble Way  [Lancs County Council]

A beautiful riverside walk along one of Lancashire's major rivers. From the wide-open estuary the route runs through Preston and on to historic Clitheroe, and then cuts into the Pennines to reach its source on remote Cam Fell. Until the final moorland section, the route passes through secluded rolling pastoral countryside without straying far from civilisation.

Rossendale Way  [Rossendale Tourism]

A 47 mile walk around Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Bacup and Whitworth.

Witton Weavers Way  [Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council]

A 32 mile walking trail of discovery around the West Pennine Moors and countryside of Blackburn and Darwen. Incorporates four shorter circular walks: the Beamers, Reelers, Tacklers, and Warpers Trails.
